Octagonal Wall Lamp

This is my first design that requires a bit of assembly with non-printed materials. I will try to explain assembly the best that I can, though it's not complicated at all.

Materials needed:

First, take the light socket apart.

The base of the metal part has 4 tabs, or nubs that will need filing, I used a pocket knife to whittle them down some. You don't have to get them all the way off, just a little and try to round the edges.

Test to make sure it fits snug in the lamp, don't force it. Now remove it from the lamp and set it aside. Also, you will not need the housing that you removed it from.

Looking at the power cord you will see that it is made of two wires, use a marker or paint to mark one of those wires. Mark it a bout a foot starting at the end that you will be feedind into the lamp. Split that end of the power cord about 3 inches so that the pair is forked. Feed the split end of the power cord through the back of lamp. You will need long nose pliers or something to grab the wires at the socket end. Once you get the ends though, one in each opening inside the lamp, strip the jacket off about 0.25 in. (6.35mm) on each of the two wires. Take either a spade terminal or ring terminal and crimp one on each of the two stripped ends.

On the bottom of the light socket you will see two screws, one copper and one silver. Back those screws out part way. Connect the wire that you marked to the silver screw (you'll find out why later). Now connect the other wire to the copper screw. You will need to bend the connectors down 90 degrees. Gently insert the socket into the lamp.

Now measure out the length of the power cord you will need and cut it. Now you will need to attach the plug onto the cord. Make sure you find the side you marked earlier and attach that to the wider prong. Next attach the other side to the narrower prong. The reason is that we are using a polarized plug and we need to make sure the neutral wire and hot wire are connected properly. I'm not including pictures because in may haste I *assumed* the plugs I bought on Amazon that were polarized were labeled correctly... Had I bothered to read the first two reviews I would have seen that they were miss labeled. So, be sure to read a couple reviews and/or questions before purchasing even the simplest of items.

I suppose you could make it easier on yourself and buy a 6ft power cord with the plug already on it. You might also want the power cord to have a switch attached. I'm using a smart bulb so I have no need for a switch.

By now the lamp is ready, just put the lamp cover on then screw in a LED bulb (and I can't stress enough that you ONLY use a LED bulb). Using a large 3M Command Strips, take the smaller mounting part and attack it to the wall where you want the lamp. Narrow side to the wall, rounded side up. Then slide the lamp over it and plug in.

I hope this instruction was clear. I will try to remember to take more pics of future projects.
